The Americano cocktail is one of those if you like, you should try drinks. In this case, it’s the Negroni. If you like a Negroni you should try an Americano.

The Americano is an aperitif cocktail with a Campari base. The American is a Negroni, made with soda water in place of gin.

This has the effect of lowering the ABV and lightening up the drink. That makes it a great lower proof cocktail, perfect for an afternoon’s refreshment.

Americano Ingredients

Campari

Campari is the most well known of the Italian spirit amari. It is an amaro with an intense bitter-orange flavour. It was created in 1860 in Novaro, just west of Milan.

Recently, it has established itself as an aperitivo and gained popularity as the spirit that gives the Negroni it’s distinctive flavour.

Sweet Vermouth

Torino style sweet vermouth is an Italian sweet vermouth. The city of Turin (Torino) is the center of Italian vermouth production. This style of vermouth is dominant style of vermouth around the world.

This style of vermouth is slightly sweeter than other styles of vermouth. Floral aromas and flavours are more pronounced in Torino style vermouth than herbal and bitter notes. This helps it balance the bitter notes in Campari.

Soda Water

Soda water lightens and lengthens this drink. That makes it a lower alcohol cocktail, making it perfect for a late afternoon sipper.
