Bloody Mary Recipe

Everybody’s Favorite Hangover Cure

The Bloody Mary is a favorite Sunday morning brunch drink.  It’s reputation as a vitamin packed, hair of the dog, meal-in-a-glass has led to some extravagances. In recent years restaurants and bar loading up on the drinkable your meal garnishes. This trend started with a little charcuterie or a strip of bacon garnish. Instagram has upped the ante and now you’ll find Bloody Marys garnished with everything from sliders to whole roast game hens.

Our take is a little more restrained. A salt rim, a slice of lime, and some pickled asparagus work just fine. If you want to get a little fancier, float a spoonful of pico de gallo salsa on top. The addition brings a pop of flavor and a little extra color to the drink.

The Infinitely Variable Bloody Mary Recipe

One of the coolest things about the Bloody Mary is that it is so ubiquitous that everybody has their own variation on it. And, everybody is quick to let you know that theirs is the absolute best. And, they’ll fight you on it.

Maybe you’re not there yet. Maybe you’d like to be. That’s okay. We’re here to help. These are our suggestions for upping your Bloody Mary game:

Change up the Hot Sauce

This is the baby step when it comes to customizing your Bloody Mary. In fact, its so basic we’re almost embarrassed to mention it. But, yeah. Go ahead and try different hot pepper sauce in your drink. You might be surprised how much it can change things.

Change up the Base Spirit

Simple. Big impact. Probably  more of a can’t go wrong thing than you’d expect. I’ve tried a lot the big ones. Gin, delicious. Tequila, a Bloody Maria, also amazing. Whiskey, also good. Even oddball spirits like Akvavit and Amaro can fit the herbaceous and savoury flavor profile of the Bloody Mary recipe.

Mess Around with the Worcestershire

Let’s face it, there’s a good chance you can’t even pronounce the word. There are a lot of other interesting options out there. Fish sauce. Maggi Sauce. You could even try to make your own. It’s actually easier than you might think.

Try Some Greenery

A few years back I started making something like a little salsa verde or chimichurri and floating it top of the drink. It is simply cilantro, jalapeno peppers, chopped shallot and rice wine vinegar. It is a delicious addition.

Addons

Pickle juice, horseradish and that sort of thing are pretty standard addons. But think about trying something adjacent. Like other kinds of pickled veg. Pickled ginger anyone?
