Notes

Swizzle Stick – The Swizzle Stick has a far more interesting history than you’d think. The mundane plastic drink stirrers were once actually sticks. Branches cut off the Swizzlestick Tree. Yes, it is an actual tree. The thin branches of the Quararibae Turbinata tree make them uniquely suited to frothing up a cocktail filled with crushed ice.

Drinkers in the West Indies have been using swizzle sticks at least since the 1840s. You spin the stick between your hands to mix drinks filled with crushed ice. People also reportedly use them to get the bubbles out of champagne. I don’t know why you’d want to remove the bubbles from champagne.
